Lisbon has 14 public holidays in 2027: Portugal's 13 mandatory national holidays, fixed in article 234 of the Labour Code, plus the city's municipal holiday, Santo António on 13 June.
2027 is a weak year: six of the 14 fall on a weekend (Easter Sunday, 25 April, 1 May, Santo António, 15 August and Christmas Day), and Portugal does not move them. A Monday to Friday worker gets 8 weekdays off. The no-leave long weekends are 1 January, Easter (26 to 28 March) and 30 October to 1 November; with one day of leave you can add Corpus Christi, Portugal Day and Republic Day.
Every date below is fixed by law. Carnival (Tuesday 9 February) is not a statutory holiday.
Lisbon public holidays 2027: the full list
This is every public holiday in Lisbon in 2027. Portugal's national holidays are fixed by law in article 234 of the Labour Code (Código do Trabalho), as restored in 2016, so unlike Spain there is no yearly decree to wait for: only the movable feasts change date, and they follow Easter, which falls on Sunday 28 March in 2027. Weekdays were calculated, not copied.

Not holidays in 2027: Easter Monday is a normal working day in Portugal. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are ordinary working days, although the government often gives civil servants the afternoon or the day off by decision each year, and many private employers follow. Carnival is shown in the table for reference only and is not counted in the 14.
Long weekends and pontes in Lisbon in 2027
With six holidays on a weekend, 2027 has few free long weekends in Lisbon, but three Thursday and Tuesday holidays make good pontes (the Portuguese word for a bridge day). Here is every holiday that falls on a working day, and what it does to your week.
Every holiday on a working day, and what it gives you
- Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January: a 3-day weekend (New Year's Day), no leave needed.
- Friday 26 to Sunday 28 March: a 3-day weekend (Good Friday and Easter Sunday), no leave needed.
- Thursday 27 May (Corpus Christi) is a ponte day: take Friday 28 May off and you get 4 days, Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 May, for one day of leave.
- Thursday 10 June (Portugal Day) is a ponte day: take Friday 11 June off and you get 4 days, Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 June, for one day of leave.
- Tuesday 5 October (Republic Day) is a ponte day: take Monday 4 October off and you get 4 days, Saturday 2 to Tuesday 5 October, for one day of leave.
- Saturday 30 October to Monday 1 November: a 3-day weekend (All Saints' Day), no leave needed.
- Wednesday 1 December (Restoration of Independence) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
- Wednesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception) is a midweek holiday: a single day off, with no long weekend unless you add two days of leave.
The best-value stretches of leave
These are calculated for someone who works Monday to Friday and gets every holiday on this page off. Check your own contract and collective agreement before you book anything.
- Saturday 5 to Sunday 13 June: 9 days off for 4 days of leave (7, 8, 9, 11 June). Portugal Day on Thursday 10 June runs straight into the Santo António weekend: the marchas populares on the night of Saturday 12 June and the municipal holiday on Sunday 13 June.
- Wednesday 1 to Sunday 5 December: 5 days off for 2 days of leave (2, 3 December). The first of the two Wednesday holidays in December, joined to the weekend.
- Saturday 4 to Wednesday 8 December: 5 days off for 2 days of leave (6, 7 December). The second Wednesday holiday, joined to the weekend before it.
- Saturday 27 November to Wednesday 8 December: 12 days off for 6 days of leave (29 November, 30 November, 2 December, 3 December, 6 December, 7 December). Both December Wednesdays in one go, if you have the leave to spare.
Holidays that fall on a weekend in 2027
Six holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday in 2027. Portugal does not move a holiday that lands on a weekend, so if you work Monday to Friday you do not get a replacement day for any of these:
- Easter Sunday falls on Sunday 28 March.
- Freedom Day falls on Sunday 25 April.
- Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May.
- Santo António falls on Sunday 13 June.
- the Assumption falls on Sunday 15 August.
- Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December.
Easter Sunday is always a Sunday, of course. If you work weekends, as many people in shops, restaurants and hotels do, these days are still holidays for you, with the extra pay or time off that working a holiday brings.
Santo António and Carnival: the two that work differently
Santo António, 13 June: Lisbon's municipal holiday
Every Portuguese municipality has one municipal holiday, and Lisbon's is 13 June, the feast of Santo António, the city's best-loved saint. The Câmara Municipal's own services, municipal facilities and schools close. For private employers, article 235 of the Labour Code treats the municipal holiday as one that applies through your collective agreement or employment contract, so check yours.
In 2027 the 13th is a Sunday, so the practical question mostly goes away. The party does not: the big night is the eve, Saturday 12 June, with the marchas populares parading down the Avenida da Liberdade and the arraiais (street parties with grilled sardines) filling Alfama, Mouraria and Bica. With Portugal Day on Thursday 10 June, one day of leave on Friday 11 June gives you a four-day weekend right through the festival.
Carnival, Tuesday 9 February: optional
Carnival Tuesday is not a mandatory holiday. Under article 235 of the Labour Code it is a day off only if your collective agreement or contract says so, or your employer agrees. For civil servants the government decides each year whether to grant the day (tolerância de ponto); that decision for 2027 has not been announced yet and usually comes in the weeks before Carnival. Schools normally close for a short Carnival break set in the school calendar.
Working outside Lisbon?
Municipal holidays follow the municipality, so Oeiras, Cascais, Sintra, Almada and the rest each have a different day. If you work across the river or out on the Linha, your municipal holiday is your workplace's, not Lisbon's.
What about school holidays?
Schools close on every public holiday, but term dates and the Christmas, Carnival and Easter breaks are set separately in the national school calendar published by the Ministry of Education. Use your school's own calendar for childcare planning, not this list.

What is open and closed on a public holiday in Lisbon?
A public holiday in Lisbon runs much like a Sunday, but Portugal is more relaxed than Spain about shops opening. Hours vary by business, so treat this as a guide and check the places that matter to you the day before.
- Government offices are closed. Lojas do Cidadão, the tax office (Finanças), Segurança Social and AIMA do not open on public holidays, and appointments are not offered. Holiday weeks are slower for anything with a queue.
- Banks are closed. Multibanco cash machines and payments work as normal.
- Shops: many supermarkets and shopping centres open on most public holidays, often with normal or slightly shorter hours, but some close or cut hours on days such as 1 January and 25 December. Small local shops are more likely to close. Check your own supermarket.
- Restaurants and cafés mostly open, apart from those that always close on a fixed weekday. Holidays are busy lunch days.
- Public transport runs, usually on a Sunday or holiday timetable. The Metro, Carris buses and trams, CP trains and the ferries across the Tejo all keep going, and the city often lays on extra late services for the Santo António night.
- Health care: your health centre (centro de saúde) is closed for routine appointments; hospital emergency departments are open 24 hours, and a duty pharmacy (farmácia de serviço) is open in every area.
- Museums and monuments often open on holidays, but several close on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 December. Check before you go.
How public holidays work for residents
Mandatory holidays and the 22 days of leave
The 13 national holidays are mandatory: on those days, activities that are not allowed to open on Sundays must close. They are paid and come on top of your annual leave, which is at least 22 working days under the Labour Code.
Weekend holidays are not moved
When a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Portugal does not add a replacement weekday. The law allows some holidays to be moved to a Monday through specific legislation, but that is not done in practice. That is why 2027, with six weekend holidays, gives Monday to Friday workers only 8 days off.
If you have to work on a holiday
Hospitals, transport, hotels, restaurants and many shops work through every holiday. If you do, the Labour Code entitles you to compensation, either extra pay or time off in lieu, and your collective agreement may set better terms. Check your contract.
Freelancers (trabalhadores independentes)
If you are self-employed nobody gives you the day off, but your clients, your accountant, Finanças and Segurança Social will be shut. Plan invoices and filings around the holiday weeks, especially early December.
Planning tips for residents
June is the month to plan around
Corpus Christi (Thursday 27 May), Portugal Day (Thursday 10 June) and the Santo António weekend come within three weeks of each other. Two days of leave (28 May and 11 June) gives you two four-day weekends, and the second one is the best party of the Lisbon year.
Book the Santo António weekend early if you are leaving
If you would rather escape the crowds, sardine smoke and late-night music, so would a lot of other residents. Trains to the Algarve and the Alentejo fill up for the 10 to 13 June weekend.
December has two Wednesday holidays
1 December and 8 December are both Wednesdays in 2027. Two days of leave around either one gives you five days off. Government offices are closed on both, so do not leave year-end paperwork for that fortnight.
Christmas Eve is not a holiday, but often a day off
24 December is not a public holiday. In recent years the government has given civil servants all or part of the day off, and many private employers do the same, but it is a decision taken each year. In 2027 it falls on a Friday.
