Lisboa's week mixed real strain with real charm: emergency rooms saw waits stretch past 11 hours, housing prices kept climbing even as the government touted new public housing units, and a cabin crew strike grounded some cross-border flights. Away from the headlines, late-summer festivals and a strong Perseid meteor shower gave residents plenty of reasons to get outside before September's strike dates start to loom.

The Week's Biggest Stories

ER wait times in Lisboa top 11 hours this summer

Hospitals in the Lisboa area are reporting emergency room waits stretching past 11 hours this summer, a spike that has drawn concern from health officials and the public. The strain adds pressure on a public health system already stretched thin during peak tourist season.

Portugal housing prices climbed 16.5% in early 2026

New data shows Portugal's home prices rose 16.5% in the first quarter of 2026, one of the fastest increases anywhere in the world. The jump reflects strong demand against a tight supply, a dynamic that keeps squeezing renters and buyers around Lisboa.

Government to deliver over 28,000 public homes by month's end

The Portuguese government says it will hand over more than 28,000 new public housing units by the end of August, beating its original target. The homes are part of the national Recovery and Resilience Plan aimed at widening access to affordable housing.

EasyJet cancels six France-Portugal flights over strike

A cabin crew strike led EasyJet to cancel six flights between France and Portugal on August 15 and 16. Passengers on those routes can request a free transfer to another flight or a full refund.

Emergency medical workers to strike in September

INEM emergency medical staff have set strike dates for September 14 and 28, over a new law and a plan to pull 100 ambulances from service. The Health Minister said the announcement caught the ministry by surprise but voiced hope for a resolution before the dates arrive.

Fuel costs in Portugal run well above Spain's

A new comparison finds drivers in Portugal pay up to 41.8 cents more per liter than drivers just across the border in Spain, largely due to differences in tax policy. It's a notable gap for anyone living near the border or planning a road trip west to east... or rather, east to west.

Lisboa Mágica Festival brings 175 free shows from Aug 18

The 14th edition of the Lisboa Mágica street performance festival opens August 18 and runs through the 23rd, spreading 175 free performances across 13 locations in the city. Performers from 10 countries are taking part, making it one of the bigger free culture events of the month.

Perseid meteor shower peaked over Lisboa this week

The Perseid meteor shower reached its peak on the night of August 12, with favorable conditions producing an estimated 60 to 100 meteors an hour. The best window fell between 2am and 5am, giving stargazers around the region a strong show.
