Lisbon closed out a hot, festival-heavy week, with a yellow heat warning and forest fire risk running alongside packed outdoor events at Praça do Comércio and Jardim do Arco do Cego. Practical news broke through too, with a new fixed-fare deal for airport taxis and a planned cost-of-living protest on the calendar.

The Week's Biggest Stories

Yellow heat warning extended through Monday in nine districts

Authorities extended a yellow heat warning covering Lisbon and eight other districts through Monday evening, as temperatures stayed high into the weekend. Residents are being told to take precautions during the hottest hours.

High fire risk declared nationwide as temperatures top 35C

The GNR flagged a significant wildfire risk across Portugal this week because of temperatures above 35 degrees. Anyone spending time in forested or farmland areas near the city is being urged to be careful with fire sources.

Fixed fares for airport taxis agreed, starting mid-October

A new deal sets fixed taxi fares from Lisbon Airport, meant to make pricing clearer and rides safer for passengers. The change takes effect on 15 October, so current metered pricing continues for now.

Cost-of-living protest planned for September 17

The PCP has called a protest for 17 September over rising living costs, pushing for higher wages and pensions. It follows a recent ECB interest rate hike and could affect traffic or transit near the demonstration route.

Praça do Comércio festival draws fadista Mariza on September 12

A day-long music festival ran at Praça do Comércio on 12 September from 11am to 10pm, closing with a set from well-known fado singer Mariza. It was one of several free outdoor events filling the square this week.

Benfica hosts Gil Vicente at Estadio da Luz on September 13

Benfica returned to home action against Gil Vicente on 13 September, their first match in 13 days. Kickoff at Estadio da Luz was set for 6pm, drawing the usual matchday crowds and traffic around the stadium.

Bike tour highlights new cycling routes on September 16

As part of European Mobility Week, a guided bike tour on 16 September will show off Lisbon's newer cycling paths and open a discussion on urban mobility. It gives residents a chance to weigh in on how the city is adapting its streets.

Madeira Festival runs daily with free entry until September 20

The Madeira Festival continues at Jardim do Arco do Cego every day through 20 September, with no entry charge. Visitors can sample Madeiran food and crafts, adding to an already busy run of festivals across the city.
